Netflix’s The Whisper Man ending was changed, so here’s what actually happens in the book

Netflix’s The Whisper Man ending changes quite a few things from Alex North’s original novel, and Pete Willis’ story is one of the biggest.

Robert De Niro plays Pete, the retired detective who originally caught Frank Carter, aka the Whisper Man. In the film, he gets pulled right back into the case when his grandson Jake is kidnapped. But if you’ve read the book, you’ll notice Pete’s story goes pretty differently.

So, what actually happens to Pete in the book ending, and what did Netflix’s The Whisper Man change?

Pete is taken out of the search much earlier in the book

In the Netflix film, Pete is right there for the final hunt for Francis Jr. After visiting Frank in prison, he works out that Francis Jr. is the new Whisper Man and uses what Frank tells him to help figure out where Francis has taken Jake. That eventually leads Pete and Tom to the Kennedy home, where they face Francis Jr.

Pete manages to reach Jake and get him out, but Francis attacks him with a screwdriver. Pete is fatally injured and dies after telling Jake to run.

The book does things pretty differently. When Jake is kidnapped, Pete is injured while trying to stop it. He is stabbed and ends up in the hospital, which basically takes him out of the search for the rest of the story.

Tom has to find Francis Jr. in the book

In the movie, Pete’s conversation with Frank helps him work out that Francis Jr. is behind the new kidnappings. He and Tom then work together to find him.

In the book, though, Tom is the one who tracks Francis down. He starts looking into a teaching assistant at Jake’s school and eventually realises that Francis is connected to what’s happening.

Tom even starts wondering if he has got the whole thing wrong before realising that Jake is actually there. He then goes after Francis to save his son.

Tom is the one who gets stabbed in the book

In the film, Pete is the one who takes the fatal injury while trying to save Jake. Tom makes it through the final confrontation without being stabbed.

In the book, it’s Tom who gets stabbed by Francis Jr. while trying to reach Jake. He survives, though.

Also, Amanda isn’t injured in the book’s ending. The movie changes that too, with Amanda getting injured during her confrontation with Francis before Pete is fatally wounded in the final struggle.

Pete still dies, but the circumstances are completely different

One thing the book and movie do agree on is that Pete dies. But basically everything around his death changes.

In the book, Pete stays in hospital after being stabbed during Jake’s kidnapping. By the time the story reaches its ending, he is dying. Tom visits him in hospital, giving the two of them a chance to finally reconcile.

But, in the Netflix thriller, Pete is back in the action and gets one final chance to protect Jake himself. During the final confrontation, he reaches his grandson and gets him out of the crawlspace where Tony Smith was killed. Francis then attacks Pete, leaving him fatally wounded. Pete’s final act is telling Jake to run.

So, both versions end with Pete dying, but his final moments mean something different.

The blue girl reveal is moved too

The whole reveal involving Jake’s mysterious girl in blue happens at a different point in the two versions. In the movie, Tom only figures out at the very end that the girl in the blue sweater looks like his late wife, Rebecca, when she was young.

In the book, he works this out earlier. Tom goes through Jake’s “Packet of Special Things”, which contains things that are important to Jake and connected to Rebecca. That helps him realise that the mysterious girl in blue is actually connected to Jake’s mum.

There’s even a small visual change. The girl wears a blue sweater in the film, but a blue dress in the book.
