If you were hoping Christopher Nolan would quickly follow The Odyssey with another huge blockbuster, I’ve got some bad news. After years of anticipation, The Odyssey has finally landed in cinemas, with tickets selling out months in advance. According to Nolan himself, it’s going to be a long wait before we get whatever comes next. Anthony Harvey/Shutterstock Speaking about whether people should expect another three-year gap before his next film to Today, Nolan didn’t exactly sound optimistic. “Oh, at least,” he replied. Turns out making The Odyssey was as exhausting as it looked. “I definitely hit the limits of my own stamina and everybody’s stamina, I think,” he explained. “I mean, it’s The Odyssey, of course it should be difficult. We’re not doing the job right making a film of The Odyssey if it doesn’t seem difficult.” Considering the film involved years of planning, huge practical effects, filming across multiple countries and one of the most star-studded casts ever assembled, it sounds like Nolan’s ready for a bit of a break. Universal That doesn’t mean he’s running out of ideas, though. Nolan recently told Empire he’s always wanted to make a proper horror film, but said the genre is surprisingly difficult to get right. In his view, there are only a handful of genuinely great horror movies, and the best ones all have an “undeniable” story at their core. So while a horror movie could be on his wishlist one day, it doesn’t sound like it’s happening any time soon. And despite slowing down between projects, Nolan has made it clear he has no plans to stop making films altogether. Back in a 2023 interview with The Independent, he said he found it “hard to imagine not wanting to make films.” Universal “I will do this for as long as somebody would support me in doing it,” he said. “It gets a bit more challenging to find subject matters that are different enough and also build on what you’ve learnt as a filmmaker, so you slow down to a degree. But I love filmmaking, and in terms of budget, I would do it at whatever level I was able to. It’s something I’ll always do.” For all the latest film and TV updates and hot takes, like our Facebook page.
