*Warning: Spoilers ahead for Evil Dead Burn* Just when you think Evil Dead Burn has squeezed every last drop of blood from its 110-minute runtime, Sébastien Vaniček throws in not one but two final surprises with a mid- and post-credits scene – but it’s the latter that has the biggest impact. The new horror film is the sixth entry to Sam Raimi’s legendary Evil Dead franchise, serving as a standalone sequel and following on from Lee Cronin’s 2023 Evil Dead Rise. Similarly to the previous entries, Vaniček delivers some ruthless gore, while expanding the mythology of the Necronomicon and tying back to the films that came before it. This time, it unleashes a demonic presence upon grieving widow Alice (Souheila Yacoub), who visits her late husband’s isolated family home where her in-laws’ attempt to use the Necronomicon results in a Deadite army instead. Evil Dead Burn post-credits scenes explained Evil Dead Burn actually features two extra scenes after the film ends: one midway through the credits and another right at the very end. The first is less consequential, and simply rounds off the movie in a fun (albeit horrific) way. It shows the family’s grandmother, now fully transformed into a Deadite, crawling on the side of the road. When a passing driver stops to check whether she needs help, the possessed woman briefly drops the act and pretends to be a helpless old lady. Needless to say, it doesn’t end well for the good samaritan, with the OAP Deadite launching a surprise attack and claiming yet another victim in true Evil Dead fashion. But, as said, it’s the post-credits scene that you’ll certainly want to stick around for, as it connects back to Evil Dead Rise in a significant way. The scene jumps back to the crematorium from earlier in the film, where an employee is showing her young daughter around the building. As they pass rows of unclaimed urns, the girl asks why so many are still there, with the mother explaining that not every family returns to collect the ashes of their loved ones. The woman then has to dip out and tells her daughter to stay put, but curiosity gets the better of her. While looking around the shelves, the girl spots an urn bearing one very familiar name: Ellie. Why the Ellie scene matters Credit: Sony If you remember, Ellie (Alyssa Sutherland) was the mother who became Evil Dead Rise’s primary Deadite after being possessed. And if that weren’t creepy enough, the lights flicker and the girl looks in the mirror to see Deadite Ellie staring back at her. She touches the mirror and Ellie touches back, before crossing over into the room itself. Deadite Ellie brutally kills the young girl before delivering one final line straight to the audience: “Mummy’s back.” It’s a huge, if not confusing, moment for the franchise given Ellie was literally obliterated in a woodchipper at the end of Evil Dead Rise. Could this mean she’ll be returning in a sequel? Even if the answer to this is “yes”, the next film in the franchise is Evil Dead Wrath, a prequel that takes place in 1972, long before the events of these films. It’s set to drop in April 2028, meaning we may have to wait a while to fully understand what “Mummy’s back” really means. For all the latest film and TV updates and hot takes, like our Facebook page.
