Tom Holland reveals hilarious reason he thought Christopher Nolan ‘hated’ his Odyssey acting

Tom Holland has revealed the slightly embarrassing moment he became convinced Christopher Nolan wasn’t a fan of his acting while filming The Odyssey.

With just ten days to go until Nolan’s huge new epic hits cinemas, the cast are deep in full-on promo mode, dropping behind-the-scenes stories and giving people a glimpse into what it was actually like working on one of the most secretive sets in Hollywood. According to Holland, things got awkward in his head very quickly.

The actor admitted that during his first day working with Nolan on set, he genuinely thought he was doing a terrible job because the director kept cutting every few minutes. Not exactly reassuring when you’re trying to impress an Oscar-winning filmmaker.

“I thought I was totally s******g the bed during his first day on set with the director, who had to cut every three minutes due to the IMAX technology…Working with the IMAX cameras for the first time is an experience.”

As it turns out, there was a very practical (and slightly less dramatic) explanation for all the stop-start action: IMAX cameras only run for a limited time before needing to be reloaded. But at the time, Holland had no idea.

“It is unlike anything I have ever seen before, and I didn’t know that it only ran for three minutes. So, I remember you would continue cutting, and I was with Jon (Bernthal) like, ‘Why does he keep cutting? Why does he keep doing that,” the actor told Fandango.

So instead of assuming it was a technical limitation, Holland’s brain went to the worst possible conclusion: that Nolan just wasn’t feeling his performance.

“And in my head, I was like, ‘Does he not like what we’re doing? What is happening?’ And then, I remember it was actually (stunt coordinator) George Cottle that was like, ‘No, no, no, no, no, there’s only three minutes in the mag.”

In The Odyssey, Nolan is taking on one of the most legendary stories in literature, with Holland playing Telemachus, the son of Matt Damon’s battle-worn Odysseus. It’s a pretty major role in a film already stacked with big names.

The cast also includes Zendaya as the goddess Athena, who guides Odysseus on his long journey home, alongside Lupita Nyong’o, Elliot Page, Mia Goth, and John Leguizamo, making it one of the most star-packed ensembles of the year.
