VisionQuest episode 7 finally connects Vision to the original Human Torch, JIM, and explains why Paul Bettany’s character shares his appearance, but where does JARVIS fit into all this? The series has added an interesting twist to Vision’s origins, and it all goes back to Phineas T. Horton, the scientist who created JIM. But if Vision was created using JARVIS, Ultron and the Mind Stone, why does he look like JIM? So, who is JIM and how is he connected to Vision? Credit: Disney+ VisionQuest episode 7 takes us back to 1939, introducing Phineas T. Horton and the story behind his creation, JIM. Horton was a scientist who built the first thinking and feeling automaton. However, this wasn’t just another scientific experiment. After losing his son, James, Horton became obsessed with creating an artificial replacement for him. He wanted JIM to be better than a human, particularly by removing the emotional pain that comes with love and loss. But things didn’t go as planned. JIM struggled to process complex emotions, causing his internal systems to malfunction and eventually setting his synthetic body on fire. In episode 4, VisionQuest established that Horton’s source code became the foundation for the artificial intelligence that followed. So, JIM wasn’t just the first synthetic being; his underlying technology influenced later AI developments. So, where does JARVIS come into the picture? Credit: Disney+ JARVIS was Tony Stark’s AI assistant, but his personality and appearance were based on Edwin Jarvis, the real Stark family butler who helped raise Tony. VisionQuest reveals that this wasn’t unusual for Stark’s artificial intelligence. FRIDAY was modelled on Allison Hogan, while EDITH was based on Edith Marks, a test pilot who worked with Howard Stark. But there’s an important difference between the person an AI is modelled on and the technology used to create it. JARVIS had Edwin Jarvis’s human identity as his inspiration, but the underlying AI technology had a much older history, tracing back to Horton’s original work. In other words, JARVIS and JIM aren’t the same person. One is an AI modelled on the Stark family butler, while the other is the original synthetic being whose source code helped lay the groundwork for later AI. So, why does Vision look like JIM instead of JARVIS? Credit: Disney+ As established in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Vision was created using JARVIS’s surviving programming, Ultron’s technology and the Mind Stone. He wasn’t just another version of JARVIS. VisionQuest now adds JIM to that history by revealing the origins of the AI technology that eventually led to JARVIS. The show also makes the connection pretty clear by having Paul Bettany play both Phineas Horton and JIM. This suggests that Vision’s resemblance to JIM is linked to the original human template behind the synthetic technology. But does that mean Vision has JIM’s personality, too? Not necessarily. The important thing is that looking like someone and sharing their personality are two different things. Vision has his own identity, even though his creation involved several existing AI systems. It’s also worth noting that the series hasn’t fully explained exactly how JIM’s appearance carried through the different generations of AI or whether Tony and Bruce deliberately chose that particular template.
