The wait is nearly over. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners season 2 is just around the corner. Ahead of its Netflix release, the showrunner has a warning you might want to hear to prepare yourself. The Netflix series is arguably one of the most surprising video-game-to-anime adaptations ever. Why? Because when Cyberpunk 2077 launched in 2020, it was plagued by bugs and glitches, with the PlayStation version even being pulled from sale. So when an animated spinoff arrived in 2022, expectations weren’t necessarily sky-high. But thanks to its impeccable, devastating storytelling, vibrant animation and epic soundtrack, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners turned out to be a massive success. So much so it even revived interest in the original game. Rather than simply retelling the game’s events, it told its own story in Night City, following David as he joined a gang of mercenaries and fell in love with netrunner Lucy. Ever since season 2 was announced, the creators have been clear that it won’t continue their story. As the promo said, “David is dead, but Night City lives on.” Instead, we’re getting a new standalone story set within the same world. And after learning the hard way with the first chapter, you might want to prepare yourself – it sounds like we’re in for another heartbreaking ride. This is the warning showrunner Bartosz Sztybor has given to viewers ahead of season 2’s release. Hypebeast pointed out that “Night City isn’t exactly famous for happy endings,” and asked what warning he’d give to viewers. Sztybor replied, “A warning? Don’t get too attached! [Laughs]… What I really hope fans do is refresh themselves on Edgerunners, and then approach Edgerunners 2 as a work that is in constant, deliberate dialogue with the first season. If you keep that relationship in mind, you’ll get so much more out of this new series.” He also elaborated further on the process of crafting stories for the show. “We love expanding this interconnected universe around Night City and Cyberpunk. But our priority is always to craft standalone stories,” Sztybor continued. “At CDPR, we never want to engineer a situation where someone feels forced to read a comic book just to understand a character in an anime. “Cameos and cross-media appearances will definitely happen – it happens in Edgerunners 2, and it will happen in future projects – but only if that character genuinely adds something meaningful to the story.” Excited?
