Hunter Schafer has opened up about getting gender-affirming bottom surgery, and what made her change her mind on getting the procedure done. The Euphoria star, who is currently on the press run for the upcoming TV show Blade Runner 2099, told Elle in a new interview that she underwent bottom surgery in December 2025. “I just had bottom surgery in December, which was amazing, and I love it so much,” she explained. Bottom surgery refers to surgical procedures that alter the genital and reproductive anatomy of a person to align with their gender identity. Although she wasn’t opposed to the idea in the past, the 27-year-old – who started transitioning at 14 – explained that she originally wanted to make her “previous body work”. But her feelings towards her gender identity have evolved over time. She went on to explain how her understanding of her gender identity has shifted over the years, particularly when it comes to balancing her broader views on queerness with what feels right for her personally. “I feel like that’s the magical thing about queerness,” she said. “On an ideological level, it’s about possibility and expansion and growth, and being on that journey and finding yourself.” But, Schafer said, she’s now reached a point where her own sense of identity feels more straightforward. “I’m a woman. I’m a girl,” she continued. Reflecting on the difference between her beliefs about gender and her own experiences, she added: “I feel like there’s always a tension there.” Credit: Prime Video Ultimately, Schafer decided to share the news now as a way of acknowledging this tension. “Maybe it’s a good thing to share, for the tension I was talking about between those two worlds [reality and ideology],” she explained. The actress opened up briefly about the recovery, saying she rented an apartment and had friends and family visit. The whole time, she was forced to lie down, adding: “I think my limit was 150 steps per day, which is nothing.” As Elle pointed out, medically transitioning was right for Schafer, but every trans person is different.
