JK Rowling is releasing two more Harry Potter books in 2027, because seven novels, eight films, a stage show and an entire cinematic universe weren’t quite enough. Ahead of the new Harry Potter TV adaptation arriving this December, Rowling is returning to the Wizarding World with two new books focused on some very familiar faces. Via Warner Bros The new releases are part of Bloomsbury’s Pocket Potters series and will be published in February 2027. One is dedicated to Professor McGonagall, while the other focuses on the Weasley twins, Fred and George. Before anyone starts clearing space on their bookshelf for the next great Harry Potter literary masterpiece, though, these aren’t new novels. The books are aimed partly at younger readers discovering the Wizarding World, while also offering longtime Potterheads a chance to revisit the stories. Bloomsbury describes the series as a collection of little guides packed with “new details” about its characters. And, yes, it is undeniably a little strange seeing Rowling’s name attached to shiny new Harry Potter releases in 2026. Via Warner Bros The author has spent years at the centre of a huge and deeply divisive debate over trans rights, after repeatedly making public comments about sex, gender and trans people. Her views have been widely criticised by LGBTQ+ organisations and many Harry Potter stars, while Rowling has continued to defend her position and describe herself as gender-critical. That context hasn’t exactly disappeared just because Hogwarts is back in the news. In fact, the timing means the new books are arriving alongside another major Harry Potter revival: HBO’s television adaptation of the original stories. Bloomsbury’s own listings specifically point to the new series arriving this Christmas while promoting the Pocket Potters books. Via Warner Bros So, just as the franchise prepares to introduce Harry, Ron and Hermione to an entirely new generation, Rowling is also putting out more books featuring characters we’ve technically already met. To be fair, if you are still deeply invested in Harry Potter, this is probably exactly the sort of thing you’ll want to read. But for everyone else, the announcement does have a slight sense of: Oh, we’re doing Harry Potter again? The original books aren’t going anywhere, and neither is the debate surrounding their author.
