If you finished Silo season 3 in one sitting and can’t wait to find out what happens next, here’s how the story ends in the books.

Season 3 explores the silos’ origins, Daniel Keene’s transformation into Troy, Silo 1’s control over the others and the purpose of Safeguard. By the finale, Juliette and Silo 18 stop Safeguard from wiping them out.

The finale then brings the two timelines together. Troy starts remembering Helen, Victor leaves him a message revealing her name, and Juliette decides that Silo 1 has to be dealt with. So, here’s where all of this eventually leads, what happens to Juliette, and how Silo ends after season 3 in the books.

Juliette discovers the outside world isn’t what she thought

After the events of Wool and Shift, Juliette is determined to understand exactly what is happening outside the silos. She even goes outside again in a specially prepared suit so she can collect samples and test what is actually killing people during cleanings.

Juliette discovers that the “dust” and the poisonous material around the silos are connected to nanotechnology. The cleaners aren’t simply dying because the whole planet is naturally uninhabitable. The environment around the silos has effectively been engineered to keep people inside and make sure anyone who goes outside doesn’t survive.

That changes Juliette’s entire understanding of the world.

Juliette digs into Silo 17

Juliette is also trying to rescue the survivors of Silo 17, where Solo and the children have been living. Using the giant digging machine, the people of Silo 18 manage to break through into Silo 17. Juliette wants to bring the survivors back, but the situation quickly gets out of control.

Then Silo 1 notices what is happening. Thurman, one of the people behind the silo system, decides that Silo 18 has become too dangerous and orders its termination. Poisonous nanobots begin spreading through the silo, leaving Juliette with very little time to get people out.

Around 200 people manage to escape through the tunnel into Silo 17 before it has to be sealed. Shirly stays behind to detonate the explosives and collapse the tunnel, sacrificing herself so the poison can’t follow the survivors.

And Lukas doesn’t make it out. He speaks to Juliette over the radio one last time and tells her he loves her before he dies in Silo 18. It’s one of the bleakest moments in the whole trilogy.

Donald decides Silo 1 has to go

While Juliette is dealing with the destruction of Silo 18, Donald is still inside Silo 1 with his sister Charlotte. He has gradually learned the full truth about what the people running the silos have done. He knows that Silo 1 isn’t just another underground shelter. It’s the place controlling the other silos and deciding which populations are allowed to survive.

Charlotte eventually escapes with help from Darcy, a security officer who starts questioning what he’s been told. Donald, meanwhile, decides he isn’t going to let Silo 1 continue. He heads towards the reactor and manages to destroy the silo, although Thurman shoots him before he can escape. Donald still manages to trigger the explosion, destroying Silo 1 and killing himself in the process.

Juliette finds the map to Seed

After Silo 18 is destroyed, Juliette initially wants revenge. She plans to attack Silo 1 herself, but then she discovers a map inside the arrangement of the servers. And that map points towards a place called Seed. It’s a location designed to help survivors start again outside the silo system.

Juliette realises that revenge isn’t really the point anymore. There are still people alive in Silo 17, and they actually have a chance to build a life somewhere else. So she changes her plan. Instead of staying underground and continuing the same cycle, they decide to leave.

The world outside is actually alive

Juliette and the survivors leave Silo 17 and begin walking through the dusty, poisoned landscape. At first, it looks exactly like everything they’ve been told. But then they get beyond the area surrounding the silos, and the world changes. There is greenery, water, trees and wildlife. The planet isn’t dead.

The poisoned environment around the silos is basically a localised zone created by the nanotechnology. The people inside the silos have spent generations believing the entire outside world is uninhabitable when, actually, there is a living world beyond the dust.

Juliette and the others eventually reach a tower filled with supplies at Seed. They get the equipment working and realise they have everything they need to start building a new life.

Charlotte finally finds Juliette

Charlotte also survives the destruction of Silo 1. She eventually makes her way across the outside world and finds Juliette’s group. The two women finally meet, which is pretty significant considering everything that has happened between their worlds.

Charlotte comes from the generation that helped create the silo system, while Juliette was born inside it and spent most of her life believing the rules were there to protect people. Now they’re both standing outside. And there is no silo telling them what to do next.

In the final scene, Juliette and Elise are sitting under the stars and talking about the future. They name constellations after Lukas and Elise’s puppy, and the survivors start thinking about what comes next.

When Courtnee asks whether they’ll make it, Juliette gives the final line of the trilogy, “I think we can make any damn thing we like.”
