The world of Top Boy is officially returning to Netflix three years after its final season, with Barry Keoghan set to reprise his role as Irish gangster Jonny McGee in a brand new prequel series. According to an exclusive report from The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix has greenlit Jonny Boy, a five-episode prequel exploring the origins of Keoghan’s character before the events of the flagship series. The Saltburn star is also set to executive produce the Netflix show, which is currently scheduled to start filming in 2027. And this isn’t simply a loosely connected spinoff using the Top Boy name. Original creator and writer Ronan Bennett is returning to write the series, while Drake – who played a major role in bringing Top Boy back after its original cancellation – will once again serve as an executive producer. The Apprentice and The Last of Us director Ali Abbasi has also signed on to direct. Credit: Netflix To refresh your memory, Keoghan joined Top Boy as Jonny McGee during its final season in 2023. Jonny was a high-ranking member of an Irish crime family and worked alongside his uncle Tadgh McGee (Brian Gleeson), who operated an international drug operation. The pair forced their way into Sully’s (Kane Robinson) drug network after his previous suppliers were murdered, with Jonny quickly establishing himself as one of the final season’s most ruthless antagonists. Exactly how far back Jonny Boy will go hasn’t been revealed just yet, but Keoghan and fellow executive producer Des Byrne have confirmed that the series will explore his origin story.
