Outer Banks season five is officially over, and while most of the Pogues got their happy ending, Rafe Cameron’s future was left a little more open, so here’s what happened to him and Sofia after the ending. Rafe and Sofia left the Outer Banks with basically nothing, and we never get a proper update on where they ended up. But the show’s creators have actually explained what happened to him, and why his ending was deliberately a bit different. ‘Rafe not being arrested for murder, that’s his win’ Credit: Netflix By the end of season five, Rafe and Sofia had left the island. They were supposed to send the Pogues a postcard from Rio, but that never happened. Rafe also didn’t return to the island for Sarah and John B’s wedding. Instead, he appeared through a video call during the celebrations. That obviously leaves loads of questions about what happened to him afterwards. When Deadline asked creators Josh Pate, Jonas Pate and Shannon Burke whether Rafe and Sofia were in South America and whether they got a share of the gold, Josh Pate said, “Good question. I don’t know.” He explained, “We sort of felt like just Rafe not being arrested for murder, that’s his win. He’s not in jail for the rest of his life.” The creators never confirmed whether Rafe and Sofia received any of the Royal Merchant gold. Instead, his ending is more about getting away and having another chance at life. Shannon Burke explained, “The intent was, it felt like as good as you could possibly get for someone who was so bad for a lot of the series.” He added, “It was as realistic as you can get with him being as bad as he had been, and so we wanted to thread the needle where he had to pay to some extent. He’s exiled, but he does get a second chance.” Why didn’t Rafe get a proper ending? Credit: Netflix Well, there might actually be a reason for that. Josh Pate said, “That is another spinoff possibility.” The creators also revealed that Rafe became a much bigger character than they originally expected. Josh said, “I think Rafe was a big change. I don’t think that at the beginning we had thought that Rafe would be as big a character as he became, as much as we started to really like Drew. Would you guys say that’s fair? I think that evolved.” For all the latest film and TV updates and hot takes, like our Facebook page. Post navigation Next storyPrevious story
