Sunny Sandler has a lot to prove in Don’t Say Good Luck, but does she actually sing in the new Netflix film? Sunny Sandler plays Sophie Birenbaum, a 16-year-old theatre kid who lands the lead role of Jenna in her school production of Waitress. But as Sophie gets ready for the biggest performance of her life, her mum Elizabeth’s cancer returns, turning what should be an exciting time into something much more complicated. But who is Sunny Sandler, and what has she been in before? Credit: Netflix Sunny Sandler is the younger daughter of Adam Sandler and Jackie Sandler. She was born in 2008 and has an older sister, Sadie Sandler. Sunny has been acting since she was a child, first appearing in her dad’s Grown Ups. She later had roles in several of his films, including Just Go with It, Jack and Jill, Blended, The Do-Over, Sandy Wexler, Murder Mystery, Hubie Halloween and Happy Gilmore 2. Her bigger breakthrough came in 2023 with Netflix’s You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah. She starred in the film alongside her sister and dad. She also voiced Summer in the animated film Leo. But Don’t Say Good Luck is a bigger test for Sunny because she is the lead. So, does Sunny Sandler actually sing in Don’t Say Good Luck? Credit: Netflix Yes. Sunny really does sing in the film. Singing is a proper part of her performance as Sophie, rather than something that has simply been dubbed over afterwards. Director Julia Hart specifically praised Sunny as a singer when speaking to Netflix Tudum. She said, “I knew she was going to be great, but she absolutely exceeded all of my expectations as an actor, and also as a singer, a hard worker, and an amazing leader on set.” Sunny performs as Sophie during the film’s musical sequences, including the Waitress performance of Sara Bareilles’ “She Used to Be Mine”. There is one thing to keep in mind, though. The film also uses the original Broadway cast recording of “She Used to Be Mine”, so not every version of the song heard in the film is Sunny’s recording. But there’s nothing in the available information suggesting that another singer was secretly brought in to handle all of Sophie’s vocals. In fact, Hart has been very open about how impressed she was with Sunny’s singing. Sunny already had experience singing Credit: Netflix Actually, Sunny had been singing long before Don’t Say Good Luck. According to Vogue Adria, she performed “A Million Dreams” from The Greatest Showman during one of Adam Sandler’s live shows when she was 10. She has also performed with her sister Sadie. In 2019, the pair sang Taylor Swift’s “Lover” at a charity concert, changing the lyrics for Hanukkah. And another connection makes Sophie’s role feel pretty fitting: Sunny was already doing musical theatre rehearsals while making the film. Melanie Lynskey, who plays Sophie’s mum Elizabeth, told Decider, “She worked so hard. She would have a day off, and she would be in musical theater rehearsals—just working so hard all the time.” Lynskey also said the pair developed a genuine relationship while filming, which helped their mother-daughter scenes. She said, “I just really appreciate her, and was really grateful that we had a true bond with each other that we didn’t have to fake.” For all the latest film and TV updates and hot takes, like our Facebook page.
