Netflix’s The Last House gets you in the mood for more films where normal life suddenly goes very, very wrong, and if you don’t know what to watch next, here are some recommendations. Louis Leterrier’s Netflix thriller traps a family inside their home while a mysterious force keeps them from escaping. Basically, it takes the familiar idea of being stuck at home and turns it into a full-blown survival nightmare. But The Last House isn’t the first film to play around with isolation, mysterious creatures and the terrifying question of what’s actually happening outside. There are loads of other films that do something similar, whether that means being trapped in one location, hiding from an unknown threat or trying to survive when the outside world has completely fallen apart. So, if you liked The Last House, here are eight films similar to the Netflix thriller, ranked from lowest to highest according to their Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer scores. 7. Bird Box (2018) Tomatometer score: 64 per cent Yes, the score isn’t exactly amazing, but I actually really enjoyed the suspense in this one. If the mysterious threat in The Last House was your favourite part, Bird Box should be next on your list. The film follows people trying to survive after an unexplained force causes anyone who looks at it to kill themselves. So, the survivors have to move around while wearing blindfolds. It’s basically another apocalypse movie where the characters have no idea exactly what they’re dealing with. And that uncertainty makes everything worse. 6. Leave the World Behind (2023) Tomatometer score: 73 per cent Leave the World Behind is a little less monster-heavy. The 2023 film is about a family that heads away for a relaxing holiday, only for a mysterious crisis to begin unfolding around them. Communications stop working, strange things start happening, and nobody knows exactly what has happened to the outside world. So, while it isn’t as creature-focused as The Last House, it has that same unsettling feeling of being cut off from the rest of the world and having absolutely no idea what is coming next. 5. Vivarium (2019) Tomatometer score: 73 per cent This film takes the whole “trapped in a house” idea and makes it seriously unsettling. A young couple go to view a house in a strange suburban development. They then discover that they cannot actually leave. Every road seems to lead them straight back to the same place. So, like The Last House, the home that should feel safe quickly becomes a prison. There aren’t creatures roaming around in the rain, but there is the same feeling of being completely cut off from the outside world and having no idea how to escape. And things get very weird from there. 4. The Mist (2007) Tomatometer score: 74 per cent The Mist is a seriously good pick if you want more monsters. After a strange mist rolls into a small town, a group of people become trapped inside a supermarket. Unfortunately, deadly creatures are hiding in the fog outside. The setup is different to the Netflix thriller, but the basic idea is very similar. The Mist also goes much harder on the psychological side of survival, showing how quickly fear and panic can turn a group of strangers against each other. And the ending is absolutely brutal. 3. Signs (2002) Tomatometer score: 76 per cent That’s a solid score for one of the older films on this list. The film follows a family living on an isolated farm after mysterious crop circles begin appearing in their fields. Soon, it becomes clear that something much bigger is happening. Signs is less interested in showing you everything immediately. Instead, it gives you little signs (see what I did there) and lets the characters, and you, try to figure out what is going on. So, if you liked the mystery surrounding the creatures in The Last House, this is definitely worth a watch. 2. 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016) Tomatometer score: 91 per cent Based on that score, you know this one is going to be good. After a car crash, Michelle wakes up in an underground bunker with Howard, a man who tells her that the outside world has been destroyed and that she cannot leave. The problem is, she has absolutely no idea whether he’s telling the truth. Like The Last House, it keeps you trapped in one place and makes you constantly question what’s happening outside. The difference is that the real threat here is much more psychological. Basically, if the mystery and isolation were your favourite parts of The Last House, start here. 1. A Quiet Place (2018) Tomatometer score: 96 per cent There are no surprises here. Jim from The Office actually made a ridiculously good horror film. A Quiet Place takes the idea of a family trying to survive an unknown threat and makes one simple rule absolutely terrifying: stay quiet. The film follows the Abbott family as they try to survive in a world where mysterious creatures hunt anything that makes a sound. So, every tiny noise suddenly becomes a massive problem. Similar to The Last House, it’s also heavily focused on a family trying to protect each other while the world outside becomes increasingly dangerous. There’s loads of tension, very little unnecessary exposition and a threat that is kept mysterious for a good chunk of the film. Basically, if you liked The Last House, this is probably the easiest recommendation on the list. You’ll never look at making a noise in the kitchen the same way again.
