Christopher Nolan has revealed the one movie he desperately wants to make after The Odyssey

The Odyssey may have literally only just come about, but Christopher Nolan might be about to add yet another genre to his already stacked CV.

The director has spent the last two decades making everything from superhero blockbusters and mind-bending sci-fi to historical dramas. But despite directing films like The Dark Knight trilogy, Inception, Interstellar and Oscar-winning Oppenheimer, there’s still one type of movie he hasn’t tackled.

Speaking in a recent interview with Fred Asquith while promoting The Odyssey, Nolan revealed what he’d like his next project to be.

“I’d love to do a horror movie,” he said.

It wouldn’t just be a random career move either. Nolan explained he’s always been drawn to horror because of how powerfully it works on audiences, describing it as an “essentially cinematic” genre.

That doesn’t mean one is definitely on the way, though. According to Nolan, everything depends on finding the right concept before he’d commit.

“It’s all about the idea. It’s all about ‘Is there a story that really compels you, and I’ve never found that for me other than in other ways.”

Given his track record, a Nolan horror film would be something completely new for the director. While many of his movies have tense or unsettling moments, he’s never made a straight-up horror.

“There’s a sense in which Oppenheimer is a horror movie,” he explained. “It certainly was very dark material to engage with for that long. And there are very significant elements of horror baked into The Odyssey in the original text.

“So, I’ve tried to fully embrace those because I think it’s a genre that’s really essentially cinematic. It’s a visceral genre. It’s one where you’re really trying to give the audience a feeling of what the characters are experiencing. And that’s the type of filmmaking I really enjoy.”

Once The Odyssey hype is over, don’t be surprised if Christopher Nolan’s next project takes audiences somewhere much darker. If he finds the right story, his first-ever horror movie could finally become a reality.
