Matt Damon has opened up about just how much his family gave up while he was filming The Odyssey, saying the blockbuster wasn’t only a huge commitment for him.

The actor attended the London premiere of Christopher Nolan’s upcoming epic alongside his wife, Luciana Damon, and all four of their daughters: Alexia, 27, Isabella, 20, Gia, 17, and Stella, 15. After spending months working on the film, he said finally getting to watch it with them made everything worthwhile.

Speaking to PEOPLE on the red carpet, Matt explained that his daughters had made sacrifices throughout the lengthy production too.

“It’s great because they had to sacrifice a lot too for this,” he said. “I went away for a while, they came and visited, but it was a lot. It was a very long movie, very grueling shoot, and I’m really excited for my girls to see it tonight.”

Matt plays the legendary Greek hero Odysseus in Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of The Odyssey, which has been one of the director’s most ambitious productions to date. Judging by his comments, it also meant spending plenty of time away from home.

The premiere also became a bit of an emotional family moment. Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Matt admitted seeing all four of his daughters together at the event caught him off guard because of how grown up they’ve become.

“They’re all having fun while I’m working, but I’m so happy they’re here,” he said. “Everybody’s so grown up. Like, I got a real dad teary moment seeing them today.”

Matt has been married to Luciana since 2005 after the pair first met while she was working as a bartender in Miami Beach. He was filming Stuck on You at the time, and Luciana already had daughter Alexia, who was four years old when they met.

The couple later welcomed three more daughters together: Isabella, Gia and Stella, and Matt has often spoken about how important family life is away from Hollywood.

In 2019, he even honoured all four girls with a tattoo, getting each of their names inked on his right upper arm alongside an existing “Lucy” tattoo dedicated to Luciana.
