‘He’s supposed to be 12, looks 30’: The wild cast ages of Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender

Though Aang is *technically* 112 years old because of being frozen in an iceberg, he’s biologically 12-years-old when we first meet him in Avatar: The Last Airbender.

When season one of Avatar: The Last Airbender was being filmed, up-and-comer Gordon was 11-years-old, a year younger than Aang in the original cartoon. Time has obviously moved on since then, causing a growth spurt for Aang in season two.

“There was just so much time in between the two seasons, so Aang is almost a completely new person,” the actor told TVLine. “Like, he’s gone through puberty. It’s crazy.”

People have already clocked the age difference online, and while it’s not exactly a dealbreaker, the rest of the cast are also getting on a bit. By the time they tackle season three, the supposed-to-be-teenage cast might fully be 40.

How old is Gordon Cormier in Avatar: The Last Airbender?

In the original cartoon, the events of the show play out in between eight and 10 months, making Aang consistently 12 throughout it.

For the second season of Netflix’s adaptation, which uses real, ageing people, Gordon Cormier is 16.

How old is Kiawentiio?

Katara is 14-years-old in the original source material, but her actress, Kiawentiio, is a staggering 20 in season two.

What is Ian Ousley’s age?

Katara’s brother Sokka is slightly older in the OG show, but only marginally at 15. In the Netflix show, he’s played by Ian Ousley, who is 24.

Zuko is one of the older main characters

Dallas Liu plays Zuko, who is 16-years-old in the original show. In real life, he’s actually 24, which kinda makes his beef with a 12-year-old even funnier.

Suki is supposed to be 16

In both season one and season two, Suki has been played by 26-year-old Maria Zhang.

Elizabeth Yu’s age is not the same as her character’s

Upgraded to a main character for season two, 23-year-old Elizabeth Yu plays 16-year-old crown princess of the fire nation, Azula.

Momona Tamada’s age is pretty close to Ty Lee’s

Much like Elizabeth Yu, Momona Tamada, 19, has been upgraded to a main character for Avatar: The Last Airbender season two. Her character, Ty Lee, is 19 in the original show.

Though she doesn’t take a larger role in season two, the actress who plays 16-year-old Mai, Thalia Tran, is 20.

Miyako Cech’s age is nowhere near Toph’s

A new addition to season two is Miyako Cech, who plays the iconic blind earthbender Toph Beifong. Miyako is fully 19 playing a 12-year-old.

There are obviously many, many more cast members in Avatar: The Last Airbender season two, but let’s be honest, it doesn’t really make a difference if 57-year-old Daniel Dae Kim is playing 45-year-old Firelord Ozai.
