The bizarre reason why Ariana Grande isn’t doing Wicked press after Cynthia was unwell

In a decision that has surely devastated the Wicked fans who are out in their droves, last night Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande both confirmed they’d be doing no press for the hugely anticipated New York premiere of For Good. The Wicked press tour last year was one that seemed hardly ever marred by any incidents and really highlighted the close bond made between Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande – who are both Oscar nominated for their portrayals of Elphaba and Glinda and are hyped to get the same recognition at next year’s awards. As the press waited to speak to the leads, Universal representatives told them at the last minute that neither Cynthia nor Ariana would be doing press at the Wicked For Good premiere – Cynthia because she was ill, and Ariana Grande for this bizarre reason.

Ariana’s reason is getting called out online

Cynthia Erivo has apparently lost her voice and isn’t feeling great – which is completely believable after an utterly exhausting, globetrotting press tour where all you are doing is speaking to endless people and putting on your best face for the public. However, when Cynthia Erivo was announced as unwell, Ariana Grande then was also skipping press at the Wicked: For Good premiere in New York because of… solidarity.

This has of course prompted a lot of memes where people are now saying they’re going to start calling into work sick if their best mate is off out of solidarity. Which has made me laugh, but I think we must cut Ariana Grande a little bit of slack right now.

In the time since the Wicked For Good press tour began, she has had to speak out and beg fans not to wish harm on her after she couldn’t make it to Brazil because of an issue with her flight that was totally out of her control. After that, Cynthia Erivo had to physically step in and remove a bizarre fan who had jumped over the railing in Singapore and mobbed Ariana – physically grabbing her.

The fan has since been jailed for being “a public nuisance” and will face a mere nine days behind bars.
