You don’t have to look very hard when reviewing over the chaos of either Wicked press tour to see that most of the world thinks it’s all got pretty intense. This is mainly down to the intense bond between Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, whose casting as Glinda and Elphaba has forged a friendship so inseparably close it makes the characters on screen’s friendships look like acquaintances. Whether it was last year’s chaos of holding space or that weird video where Cynthia fixed Ari’s necklace even though there was nothing wrong with it, or this year’s chaos resulting in Cynthia having to physically protect Ariana from a terrifying “weird” fan – it’s all a lot. There’s now a new Wicked For Good press tour ‘weird’ video going viral because what happens in it is honestly beyond explanation and the tweets about Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo show just how mad things have gotten.

The video shows Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande and producer Marc Platt – and at one point Marc grabs Ariana’s arm and excitedly shakes it. To be fair, it is quite vigorous but nothing bad is happening. Ariana looks very shocked at this and someone on TikTok said she then “held her arm like an injured dog paw” – to which Cynthia then cradled it and put her head to it? Why? We have no clue.

Let me shed some humble former theatre kid insight on what I truly believe is happening. When you’re in a musical on whatever scale, you DO get sucked into this family vibe with your cast on a level that you’ll only understand if you’ve ever been in a show with people. You forget how intense things look on the outside because you’re in your bubble and it makes sense to you. All I think of when I see these clips is that the cast of Wicked are a form of this but amplified to a global scale. For two years. Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo don’t realise how ‘weird’ a video like this looks to non Wicked folk – and to be honest, they probs don’t care. They’re going through something huge!

That’s my theory anyway. Personally I’ve never listened to an arm with my ear, but Cynthia and Ariana – you do you, divas.
