Pure chaos! Inside the utter ‘shambles’ of the The Hunger Games: On Stage’s opening night

The first ever show saw delays, long queues and accessibility complaints

The Hunger Games: On Stage had its first premier last night as the previews opened for the long awaited theatrical adaptation – but what should have been a huge occasion filled with spectacle was branded “a mess”. The Hunger Games: On Stage opened at its purpose built Troubadour theatre in Canary Wharf – and the images coming out of the arena, in-the-round staging look impressive. But what was less impressive is the TikTok’s coming out about the ‘shambles’ regarding The Hunger Games: On Stage which included delays, accessibility complaints and massive queues.

The Hunger Games: On Stage hit a shaky start

The audience were all volunteering as tributes to mayhem it seems. Mia Carragher, daughter of Scouse footballer Jamie, is starring as Katniss and veteran actor John Malkovich stars as President Snow – but their performances were the least important part of the headlines after everything unfolded.

The “shambles” happened before the venue even opened and The Hunger Games: On Stage began.

Huge queues as venue wasn’t open five minutes after the show was meant to start

Videos on TikTok have circulated of mammoth queues outside of the Troubadour – with people complaining queues were still this long five minutes after the show was meant to start – meaning no one was seated or even in the building after the 7.30 time the show’s meant to start.

The show didn’t end til almost midnight

@evan.encore the amount of people leaving as interval started at 21:50 😭 this is absolutely not a dig at the cast/crew/foh i know they slaved to make the show happen tn but omg who actually saw the end of the show 😭 #thehungergames #thehungergamesonstage #fyp #westend #londontheatre ♬ Horn of Plenty (From “The Hunger Games”) – The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra

The Hunger Games: On Stage runs at three hours with interval – but people have reported on TikTok that the show didn’t start til an hour late and people were not getting out until 11.45pm.

Despite the delays though, and many complaints online, most said the show was still amazing.

Accessibility difficulties

@sophjbutler Boy that was a MESS @The Hunger Games On Stage !!! There was so many problems tonight and you expect there to be teething issues on opening night but having the wheelchair bay spaces have a totally blocked view of the stage is just unacceptable!!! How do you build a brand new theatre from the ground UP & manage to have an oversight like this. Beyond disappointing. #thehungergames #thehungergamesonstage ♬ The Hanging Tree. One creator branded it all “a mess” after saying she got a full refund because she had no view from her accessible seat. Sophie Butler said on TikTok “I have just walked out of The Hunger Games: On Stage before the show started with a refund because my seat wasn’t accessible. There are so many problems with that show tonight and I know it’s opening night. It was meant to start when I walked out, and it still hasn’t started. I’m absolutely fuming.

“I can’t help but laugh because the situation is so ridiculous. I couldn’t see anything from my space. This is a brand new theatre and this was the view from my seat.” She then showed an obscured view of the stage.”
