‘My name gives me dominion over you demon!’ Explaining the viral Valak sound on TikTok

There’s a very iconic TikTok sound dominating the For You Page right now and as a HUGE horror fan it is one that brings me endless joy. It is of course a true celebration of the iconic Lorraine Warren and how people are realising it was extremely camp when she shouted at Valak. If you don’t know who Valak is off the top of your head, you would know it more as the nun – probably one of the most famous faces of 2010s horror who dominated so hard in films not focussed on it it had to get its own spin off as well. Since the TikTok sound of Lorraine Warren shouting at Valak is everywhere right now, here’s the context behind the audio and what it’s from.

The clip basically has the iconic moment Vera Farmiga destroys Valak in The Conjuring 2 – in her iconic role as real life paranormal investigator and psychic medium Lorraine Warren. In the audio, she says “Your name gives me dominion over you demon. And I do know your name. You are Valak. The defiler. The profane. The marquis of snakes.”

It’s an iconic moment in the film because all throughout The Conjuring 2 – and in the background of the first film – Valak is terrifying Lorraine. Lorraine keeps seeing a vision of her husband Ed dying and Valak is also continually stalking and tormenting her at every turn.

By the dramatic climax of The Conjuring 2, Lorraine has learned and remembered who Valak is because she went into a trance once and wrote it in a book. In demonology, it’s a well known trope that naming a demon gives you power over it. She names Valak and ends the reign of terror. For a while, at least.

Basically everyone started to realise how camp it was that Lorraine Warren slogged back into the Enfield home to get rid of Valak ice and for all, and did so by basically just dragging the nun for filth. The Valak TikTok sound has made The Conjuring 2 get a new lease of life and it’s honestly so iconic.

All the videos are just calling Lorraine’s monologue “the hardest line of all time” and they’re truly so real for that.
