The Wicked: For Good trailer is getting dragged because of its drab and bleak visuals

The final trailer before the release of Wicked: For Good has landed – and I hope you are all ready to hold space for Wicked to dominate the pop culture landscape once again. The first Wicked movie was a cultural phenomenon, and as a huge fan of the musical it was a dream come true seeing the spectacle on the big screen done so well and with so much love and reverence. The musical has been split across two films, with Wicked: For Good handling act two and seeing the conclusion of Elphaba versus the Wizard of Oz and the political navigations. But once again, like the first film before it, Wicked: For Good trailer is getting dragged for its bleak approach to colour and how drastically grey it looks compared to the original The Wizard of Oz.

As soon as the Wicked: For Good trailer was released, it was instantly dragged online for the ugly colour compared to the technicolour magic of The Wizard of Oz. One example was how bleak and shadowy the film looks in the shots, and how the Tinman in particular just looks so absent of life and character. I get that Wicked is a more cynical and negative view of the glory of Oz compared to the first film it’s all based on but … come on.

People trying to clap back at the critiques made an edit with the vibrance up saying “this is how movie twitter wanted Wicked: For Good to look like” and everyone in the replies is basically like “yes, we did actually”. Like a CRUMB of colour wouldn’t go a miss? Everything still looks so washed out.

Maybe this was to be expected considering the fact the first Wicked had the same issue and they shot them concurrently, but people are no less disappointed.

I’m sure the film will still be amazing, but it would be so much more so full of life with a pop of colour. When righteous moaner said “Sorry but the colour grading of Wicked is so washed up and boring, wish they went for a more technicolour film”. I can’t help but agree.

Seeing Wicked on stage feels as technicolour and bursting with life as the original film – it’s a shame the trailer for For Good is getting dragged but it’s easy to see why people are gutted.
