Charli XCX’s first major acting role in a film just debuted and the reviews are… mixed
She has SEVEN films coming out in the next few months
Charli XCX is a workaholic, by her own admission. Not content with the fact she pretty much permanently releases music, and not content with the fact that her latest effort managed to become the biggest of her entire career and Brat ascended beyond acclaimed album status but became a pop cultural phenomenon – she had other plans. Over Brat Summer, Charli XCX filmed Erupcja – a lean, 71 minute film that she co-wrote, produced and starred in. It is the first of seven films that Charli has coming out where she either has a lead or supporting role and it’s safe to say Charli XCX the actor is here to stay. Erupcja just had its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival and the reviews are in for the first Charli XCX acting debut – they’re a mixed bag.
The Guardian called the film shallow and said Charli ‘gives acting a trial run’

Starring Charli xcx, Lena Góra, Jeremy O. Harris and Will Madden, it centers on two women with a combustible relationship — one woman is Polish and the other is visiting the country.

The first clip just came out yesterday, and Erucpja tells the story of Charli XCX as a British woman who has an explosive relationship with a Polish woman played by Lena Góra whilst she’s visiting the country. In the scene that was released yesterday, you can see the chemistry between them honestly is pretty great and it’s amazing seeing Charli shine not just making the best music you’ve ever heard. There’s nothing she can’t do honestly.

But not everyone’s convinced. The Guardian gave the film a two star review, and said of Charli’s performance calling her “neither the full star or the anchor” of Erupcja. Then further saying of her performance “Charli reveals little playing her, either extending her pop persona or, in more demanding moments, operating with the over-precision of a diligent student.”
On Twitter however, the reaction has been more favourable. David Ehrich quite simply decrees “Charli XCX is a good actress” in his review for Indiewire. Which, as he also points out, is a good thing because she’s about to star in seven films.
SEVEN!?
The seven films Charli has coming out include 100 Nights of Hero, directed by Julia Jackman, and sees Charli starring alongside the likes of Maika Monroe and Emma Corrin in a pretty great looking historical fantasy flick. It’s had amazing reviews in its previews so far.
She is also due to star in a film called Sacrifice about a celebrity gala gone wrong, which feels very pop star doing some acting coded. She’s in that one with big names like Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Evans.
Charli’s also going to be in a remake of Faces of Death – the 1978 horror. Her co-stars include Barbie Ferreira and Dacre Montgomery – aka the fit villain from Stranger Things.
The other upcoming flicks include erotic thriller I Want Your Sex, Natalie Portman and Jenna Ortega starring thriller The Gallerist and a big mockumentary called The Moment which is about a pop star preparing for their first headline tour.
If Erupcja is Charli XCX debuting in her acting era and it’s only getting mixed reviews, she’s got a LOT of big films to get acclaim in coming up because they all sound like bangers.
