People are only just learning this iconic British actor voices Dobby in Harry Potter
In all my years on this earth I have never known this
I have watched Harry Potter from start to finish, the full franchise, countless times in my silly little lifetime. That’s what happens when you were born in 1996 and were raised on these books by SHE who must not be named – and the films that followed. I was there for the Dobby phenomenon from the start, and I remember how much of a breakout star he was in Chamber of Secrets and all his subsequent appearances. I’m surprised it wasn’t a national day of mourning by the time Deathly Hallows part one hit the cinemas and his fate traumatised the country. But in all my years of watching Harry Potter, I have never given much thought to the actor who voices Dobby. I just sort of believed Dobby was real. I know that sounds crazy, but let me off. We all have our moments.
The actor who voices Dobby in Harry Potter is a really famous UK star who just got massive acclaim last year for his role in Mr Bates VS the Post Office – here’s everything he’s said about playing such a fan fave.
Dobby was voiced by Toby Jones
Truly an iconic British actor and a mainstay in TV and film, Toby Jones is well known for his endearing roles as well as his more sinister ones. He was deeply unnerving in Doctor Who and Sherlock, for example.
Everyone’s had a wake up call this past few weeks that it was he who voiced Dobby in Harry Potter after Toby was on The Graham Norton Show and spoke about his time in the HP franchise.

A fair few fans of Harry Potter on Twitter / X, who also clearly had no clue who voiced Dobby, reacted to the show – where Claudia Winkleman was stepping in for Graham. One wrote “Why has Claudia Winkleman just informed me that Dobby was Toby Jones. Literally the bloke who tried to murder Sherlock saying ‘I like to watch it happen’ was Dobby. HELP ME.”
Another said “How did I not know Toby Jones is the voice of Dobby in the Harry Potter movies?!?!?!” So turns out I’m not alone in my ignorance here. Phew.
