Doja Cat just responded to the criticism of her divisive Shirley Bassey Oscars performance

‘The nerves got to me, and a b*tch hit some flats’

One of the most talked about aspects of the Oscars 2025 was the fact Doja Cat did a Shirley Bassey performance, belting out Diamonds Are Forever, miles apart from her usual style. The performance was deemed by many to be a bit rough, and didn’t exactly go down well with audiences. One viral tweet said that whoever got Doja Cat to do a Shirley Bassey song at the Oscars “should be fired” – and now she’s responded to the criticism with a very honest statement on her Instagram.

If you haven’t seen the performance, it’s a big stylistic departure for Doja Cat to sing a big classic like this. Honestly, I think she sounds great? Maybe I’m in the minority – but a lot of the main pop girls who don’t rap couldn’t sing like this, and her range is pretty impressive to tackle this in the first place. Maybe I’m just a bias fan, but it doesn’t sound that bad to me!

Nonetheless, it’s safe to say the response is mixed. Doja Cat posted on Instagram (looking absolutely iconic) and explained more about the Oscars and addressed the criticism.

Doja Cat wrote: “I danced with Sarah Paulson last night also Flow is my favourite movie of all time cuz it’s a story about friendship. Thanks to the Academy Awards and Vanity Fair for having me. I never get to sing like that and what I did was brave and scary as fuck for me. I know a lot of people didn’t like it but a lot of people did and I feel good that I pushed myself. The song is a classic and I put a lot of work into it but the nerves got to me and a bitch hit some flats. I can’t wait to do something like that again. What a blessing that was. I feel amazing about the whole thing. Bye”

Fair play. I honestly thought she ate that.
