A rundown of all the Karla Sofía Gascón Oscars drama after Emilia Pérez star attends in person

Emilia Pérez was controversial even before the drama surrounding its lead actress Karla Sofía Gascón. The film received the most nominations out of any of the other movies up for Best Picture, but with intense backlash from Mexico regarding how the film handled the issues of the country with minimal involvement of actual Mexicans and a very divided viewer reception to both its content and its soundtrack, the haters of Emilia Pérez made themselves known early on. And then emerged Karla Sofía Gascón had tweeted MANY questionable things – including about her co-star Selena Gomez and Black Lives Matter and the Oscars previously. People didn’t know if she was going to attend in person – but Karla Sofía Gascón showed up to the Oscars and the drama came with her; here’s a rundown of what you missed.

Conan O’Brien was hosting this year’s Oscars for 2025, and he said some brutal jokes about the Karla controversies. The first one was “Little fact for you: Anora uses the F word 479 times. That’s three more than the record set by Karla Sofía Gascón’s publicist” – yikes.

He did first start by saying “Karla Sofía Gascón is here tonight – and Karla, if you are going to tweet about the Oscars, my name is Jimmy Kimmel.” Savage.

Nicole Sperling wrote in her live blog from the Oscars “Karla Sofía Gascón walked out to the bar to get a drink, surrounded by a phalanx of people, including her daughter, her agent, a concerned publicist from Netflix and private security. She was kissed by Adrien Brody, who chatted with her. When approached by a Times reporter, Gascón was jovial and interested in chatting. But before she could get out any answer, the Netflix publicist shut down any more conversation and moved the reporter away from Gascón, later saying “I hope you understand.” Gascón fetched her drink, winked and blew a kiss before being whisked away.”

The two stars of Emilia Pérez had to come face to face as they took their seats. They shared an interaction, their first public one since Gascón’s old tweets resurfaced. In one of them, she had referred to Selena as “a rich rat”.
