Ethan Slater’s ex-wife breaks silence on ‘dark days’ after ‘public downfall’ of her marriage

Ethan Slater’s ex-wife Lilly Jay has broken her silence on the impact his relationship with Ariana Grande has had on her, admitting it’s cast a “shadow” across her life.

In an emotional personal essay for The Cut, she reflected on dealing with the “sudden public downfall of my marriage” in the “shadow of my husband’s new relationship with a celebrity.”

His ex-wife also admitted the devastating impact of being “unable to escape” the promotion of Wicked, in which Ethan Slater’s new girlfriend Ariana Grande stars. Lilly confessed: “Days when I can’t escape the promotion of a movie associated with the saddest days of my life are darker.”

Ariana and Ethan Slater started dating whilst filming for Wicked, which was shortly after his ex-wife Lilly had given birth. Whilst she has briefly spoken out about her thoughts on their romance before, this essay was the most personal perspective we’ve had on how it all affected her.

His ex-wife explained in the essay how she moved to the UK from America to support Ethan Slater’s career, and didn’t notice the “growing distance” between them whilst he was filming Wicked with Ariana Grande.

Lilly wrote: “I confidently moved to another country with my 2-month-old baby and my husband to support his career. Consumed by the magic and mundanity of new motherhood, I didn’t understand the growing distance between us.’

She added: “No-one gets married thinking they’ll get divorced, in the same way we don’t board a plane expecting to crash. I really never thought I would get divorced. Especially not just after giving birth to my first child and especially not in the shadow of my husband’s new relationship with a celebrity.”
