Erm, the Wicked dolls packaging mistakenly leads to a porn site, so what’s actually going on?

I’m actually in shock this managed to happen

Right, so the Wicked film comes out in the UK later this month, but obviously it wouldn’t be a hugely anticipated release without at least one hiccup. And this one is unintentionally absolutely hilarious I’m sorry.

In case you’re not caught up to date, the toy company Mattel accidentally included a link to what was supposed to be the official Wicked website on the back of the officially licensed doll’s packaging. However, this didn’t exactly go to plan as a “misprint” on the doll’s packaging meant that the link took buyers to a porn site instead of the Wicked website.

Okay, but how did we get to this point and what’s going to happen to the shameful dolls next? Let’s get into the whole thing and unpack it all because it’s a lot.

Right, so whilst it’s not entirely clear exactly when these dolls hit the shelves it seems their secret was discovered over this weekend, as buyers flocked to X to unveil their discovery.

One user wrote: “The official Mattel Wicked dolls link to a porn site on the box.” Another added: “LMAO Universal Pictures put the wrong website for @wickedmovie on the back of their dolls for kids. It leads to a p0rn website.”

It seemed this was the first alert Mattel had of the misprint, and they issued an apology yesterday.

Their statement said: “Mattel was made aware of a misprint on the packaging of the Mattel Wicked collection dolls, primarily sold in the U.S., which intended to direct consumers to the official WickedMovie.com landing page. We deeply regret this unfortunate error and are taking immediate action to remedy this.

“Parents are advised that the misprinted, incorrect website is not appropriate for children. Consumers who already have the product are advised to discard the product packaging or obscure the link and may contact Mattel Customer Service for further information.”

It seems like Mattel is frantically trying to recall all of the Wicked dolls that have the porn misprint link on them and don’t tell me it’s not going to become a collector’s item.

On both eBay and Amazon, the dolls have been completely recalled, and are starting to disappear from physical shelves as well.

Someone on X managed to actually find one of the original dolls in Walmart but was foiled when they got to the checkout. They explained a message showed on the screen which read: “WICKED SINGING DOLL is on product lockdown and cannot be sold. Call supervisor.”

However, it seems like this is quite a specific Mattel issue, as both Lego and Betty Crocker have issued Wicked themed products which, fortunately, do have the correct website on the back.

It’s unknown whether the dolls will be re-released with the correct website on the back or if this will be a permanent recall. Hopefully, there won’t be too many traumatised children at Christmas.
