The stages of going out at UW-Madison depending on what year you are

We’ve all been the freshman with a lanyard around their neck with their whole floor headed to a party

At 6pm

Freshman: Around 6 p.m. you are ordering in an early meal from PDR or sushi express. You probably wont start getting ready for another two hours but need to make sure that you have time to digest and maybe squeeze in an episode on Netflix before you start doing your hair and makeup

.

Sophomore: You also just placed an order in for dinner, but are planning on eating it in an hour or so. You and your roommates are sitting in the living room discussing what bars you will try to get into tonight. You heard that the police might be raiding so you strategically plan where to hit first and what ID to use.

Junior: Right now you are either sleeping or watching TV. You aren’t too worried about getting into either the KK, Monday’s, the Double U, or Whisky’s because you are 21, or by this point you have been granted with an amazing ID.

Not like this one, of course

Senior: 100 percent sipping on a glass of wine after coming home from your last class of a week (if you still actually take any) or finished up you internship. You could very possibly be headed out for a nice dinner too or watching a movie.

It’s 8pm and you’re?

Freshman: At this point your hair is done, your friend is helping you with your makeup, and you are scrambling to find a cute outfit. Sure, you didn’t get into a bar last week and could wear the same shirt because no one saw you out, BUT you did have a photo-shoot before in the dorms so your whole instagram feed saw your outfit.

Sophomore: Right now you are done with dinner and have made the executive decision to go to bars regardless if the police are coming. If we go down, we all go down together. You start getting ready because you don’t want to walk in as 25 when juniors and seniors who really do look older than you show up as 21.

Junior: Still trying to decide where to go. You’re a little stuck in the middle and don’t know if you should go out with the seniors who might make you feel a little unwanted or feel old and washed up drinking with the underclassman.

Senior: Literally just hanging out. No fear about getting in anyplace, maybe just preparing for a nice leisurely pregame.

It’s 10pm now what

Freshman: By now you are making power moves to Ruby (the side room at liquid that no one knew had a name until this year). You are guaranteed to get in, if you beat the long line of course. You couldn’t be more excited to be squished up against 200 other people and attempt to walk around or dance while drenched in sweat.

Sophomore: Those of you with the “fine” Id’s went to Mondays and Whisky’s. You know your zip code and the year you graduated high school perfectly, so you have no worries. You’re wearing an outfit that makes you look mature and trendy at the same time. Those of you with the “amazing” ID’s tried for the KK and have your 20 ready to slip to the bouncer once he asks for a second form and you “forgot it at home.”

Junior: Waiting another 30 minutes or so once the lines die down and you get a text from the sophomores saying where they got in and which venue seems most entertaining. If your friend happened to have turned 21 this week, you are celebrating by having her go to the liquor store to pick up for all of you (because she offered and can’t wait for the man behind the counter to ask for her ID).

Senior: Getting dressed and putting on something comfortable, chic and cool (because why try to look any older than you are?). You are drinking with all of your friends while remembering you don’t have to force shots down your throat because sipping on drinks at bars will actually make you the happiest drunk.

It’s midnight did you make it?

Freshman: If you didn’t either leave with some boy who lives in your dorm and will have to see every day going forward, take a sick friend home, or make a stop at PDR (possibly for the second time in the night), then your night is done. You had so much fun but you can only dance to old throwback songs for so long. Plus you started preparing for your night 6 hours ago – that’s a long time.

Sophomore: Once you see how much fun your friends are having at the KK while you’re at another (not as fun) bar, you venture over hoping you will get in.  You quickly realize the guys you’re with have terrible ID’s and they don’t want to bother trying, some of you go back with them to their frat to hang out.

Junior: Right about now you’re sipping on drinks trying to mingle with people you’ve never met before (which can be hard because you are probably surrounded by the same people you’ve always been surrounded by for the past 3 years). Some of you begin to wonder if you should’ve stayed in and just caught up on work while the other half of you wont be home for another three hours.

Senior: Life is great right now. You have your drinks, your friends, and the bartender who knows your name and is handing out free shots. Then you see the sophomores roll in and begin to realize how little time you have left at school and start to get emotional.

2am only the strong make it this far

Freshman: A few things could be going on right now. You are either passed out, tip toeing back into your room so your roommate doesn’t wake up, binge eating with your friends on your bed, or hysterically crying because he only spoke to you once tonight. Don’t worry, there’s always next time!

Sophomore: Just hanging out at the frat might have lead to you sleeping there, or walking back home with the rest of your friends. If you’re not sleeping you are going through the fridge to find something healthy to indulge in (spring break diet!) or texting the one friend who said she wouldn’t sleep out again for the fourth night this week asking if you can lock the door because honestly there’s no way she’s coming home.

Junior: If you didn’t find a nice guy to go home with (because by this point you are done wasting your time and just having fun, right?…) then you are back home hanging out with your friends. Maybe you are watching a chick flick, or maybe you are watching crazy YouTube videos, who knows.

Senior: At this point you are sleeping for sure. Or maybe just hanging out talking with some friends. You’re way past finding someone random and want to get a good nights sleep, so you can be a real person the next day.
