Two officers injured after man physically attacks pedestrians on UW campus

Suspect could have been under the influence of drugs during the incident

UW police were dispatched to the surrounding areas of Slichter Residence Hall at around 5:45 p.m. Saturday after receiving word of a man physically assaulting pedestrians.

After arriving on the scene, police questioned a suspect who quickly became agitated. Officers said that the man, later identified as the 18-year old Isaac Ziegler, charged them and ran away from the scene.

Police followed Ziegler to the Lakeshore Path where a struggle ensued. After using their Taser, officers were able to detain him and transport him to the hospital for medical examination. Witnesses and officers said that Ziegler’s behavior resembled that of someone under the influence of drugs.

Ziegler was later booked by Dane County jail with two charges of resisting arrest and causing injury to police officers. According to police reports, he also faces a disorderly conduct and marijuana possession charge.

Both officers were treated and released from the hospital Saturday evening after sustaining injuries from the struggle. The injuries were said to be minor in the case of both officers.

According to UW Police Department, Isaac Ziegler, 18, is a resident of Marshall. It is not clear why he was near the residence hall at the time of the attacks.
