UW-Madison Sigma Chi fraternity suspended

The fraternity members were reportedly singing a song glorifying sexual assault

The Sigma Chi fraternity was suspended by the university’s Committee of Student Organizations on Tuesday.

The documents released by UW-Madison stated the fraternity was given the suspension for providing alcohol to minors at an October party and for teaching their members a song glorifying sexual assaults.

The Associated Press, in order to obtain documents related to the October Sigma Chi incident, filed for an open records request with the university. The school did release documentation that described the incident at the Sigma Chi fraternity house.

Reportedly, the fraternity members sang a song as other students listened at the event about a presumed fictional Sigma Chi member who sexually assaulted 100 women against a wall. The complaint filed also described the scene as “[having] beer everywhere”.

The suspension means the fraternity will be barred from holding any events and activities, as well as barred from operating with rights and privileges of a registered student organization until March 1st. After which they will be on probation with no allowance of alcohol at any of their events up to May 8th. The probation will then be continued until Jan 23, 2018.
