New year resolutions aren’t a bad thing, and here’s why

Can we stop bashing them please?

At the start of every new year, I find my social media filled with a mixture of remarks regarding resolutions. They range from excitement of setting goals to a vast array of negativity. I have a few words for those who say things like:

“You shouldn’t need a new year to set a goal.”

This isn’t true for everyone. Not every person has the luxury of waking up any given morning and completely changing their lives. People have routines. People have a lot going on with work, school, and just life in general. Living freely isn’t always easy. So what if someone wants to start fresh in 2017? So much can happen in one year.

“Can’t wait for everyone to crowd the gym the next few weeks.  Don’t worry, they won’t stick to it.”

A reminder to everyone who considers themselves a frequent gym-goer: you were new to the gym at one point in your life. We all start somewhere. We’re not born perfect. It’s hard for some people, especially those with self-esteem issues, to walk into a gym. We all know the hardest part is getting there. They know the frequent gym-goers are judging them. So consider this the next time you see a newcomer in the gym.  Who is your judgement benefiting?

The negativity is vastly disheartening. When did we become so quick to bring down others who want to set some goals? Not everyone can up and change their lives, though I admire those who can. Many people get into this contagious and motivating state this time of year. Sometimes all we need is a little nudge from the promise of a new year to get started. What’s so wrong with that?

I encourage you all to set a resolution for yourself this year, big or small. Goals are a way of tracking the quality of life. They’re a way to create purpose and fulfillment in your life. Not every resolution is fulfilled either, which is OK. We also learn through failure. If you’re one for competition, it’s a great way to challenge yourself. But please, don’t bring down those who are trying to create a better life for themselves. The last thing this world needs is more negativity.

So get out there and set some goals for yourself. There’s no better way to learn about yourself and become the best version of you.
