UW Madison campus map of sexual assaults

Greater than 90 percent of sexual assaults on college campuses go unreported

According to the Association of American Universities campus climate survey, one in four women are sexually assaulted while in college. Being a victim of sexual assault is a deeply personal and traumatizing experience.

This leads to greater than 90 percent of sexual assault victims on college campuses not reporting the assault they experienced.

Though, it is still something to be seen to be able to visualize how many have been reported on our campus within a year.

The following map illustrates the sexual assaults reported to the UW Madison Police Department from September 1 2015-October 12 2016.

You will see many of the reported assaults were in a wide variety of locations; however, there was a trend of a greater amount of reports in university residence halls.

According to the Wisconsin Street Journal, the University of Wisconsin-Madison is currently under it’s fourth investigation for the handling of sexual assault cases.

The reporting process is often a reason many sexual assault survivors don’t report their assault to the police.

If you are a victim of sexual assault there are many campus resources available through UHS, and you can report your sexual assault here.
