What you need to know about the vice presidential debate

Overall, the 90 minute duel could be reduced to sassy middle-school comments and justifying their running mate

Hilary Clinton adding Senator Tim Kaine to her campaign was met with mixed emotions. This harmonica-playing, Spanish speaking, Senator from Virgina seemed amazingly average and lack luster. Donald Trump also continued his trend of surprises by declaring Mike Pence his running mate. Pence currently serves as the governor for Indiana and was a former congressmen for the state. Pence has caused a ruckus amongst the American citizens due to his far right alignment on social issues such as abortion and gay rights.

These men went toe-to-toe last night in a debate that could be classified as “the one with many interruptions”. Though the recent election process has had many outburst during debates from every side, this complete lack of control left the audience confused, annoyed, and overwhelmed.

Opening statements were mostly traditional between the two men. Kaine claimed his credentials as a politcian made him fit for the VP seat, while Pence tried the emotional approach and eluded to his “regular, farm boy”  childhood to make him more relatable. However, both candidates began to open fire on one another after a mere five minutes.

Throughout the debate, Pence made Hilary out to be unfit, corrupt, and negative. Don’t worry,  the emails were brought up once or twice (or 100 times). He claimed Hilary acting as Secretary of State has only made the country weaker and more susceptible to terrorism. He also argued the Democratic view on immigration and financial reform will leave the American society in shambles.

On multiple occasions, Pence claimed Clinton and Kaine were running a campaign of insults and negativity. He even went as far as to say the “scare tactic” was being utilized by the Clinton campaign frequently. With the constant defending of Trump’s actions and sly comments at Hilary, it seemed as if Pence forgot to budget in time to actually inform the people of the plans.

Tim Kaine, however, got real heated real fast. His constant message for the American people was someone who won’t release their tax returns could never be trusted in office. Trump’s tax returns are becoming a broken record, just like the emails. Kaine quoted Trump’s many instances of less than political rhetoric and demanded  Pence defend his running mate.

Kaine landed his sucker punch by eluding to the fact that since Trump is finding loopholes in the tax system, he’s not supporting education, military forces, or veterans. His two minute arguments were always fueled with a small attack on the Trump campaign and then a step by step summary on how the Clinton campaign plans to change American politics.

One of the only things the gentlemen agreed on was the aspect of criminal justice in regards to race. Both believed police should be given the tools to stay safe as they are extremely important members of the American institution. However, all agreement stopped there. Pence was outraged the Clinton campaign had claimed there was cases of inherent bias. Kaine, in an almost comical fashion, rebutted by saying refusing to admit there is a problem will never fix the problem.

Overall, the 90 minute duel could be reduced to sassy middle-school comments and justifying their running mate. The debate isn’t likely to change a lot of political opinions in the United States.

One, there are a lot less people watching these debates than the presidential. Two, anyone who was watching probably has a migraine from the constant yelling over each other and doesn’t remember their main points anyways. No matter who gets elected, it’s obvious they’ll have a right hand man to back them up when they receive some hate.
