The Daily Grind is the heart of William and Mary’s revolutionary spirit

Lattes with my comrades

Standing just a few yards behind The Sadler Center, where the hub of college activity takes place, the Daily Grind sits in a small brick building surrounded by tall evergreen trees.

No matter the time of day, there is always a multitude of students huddled in and outside of the building doing homework, or simply taking a moment to breath in the beauty of the campus that surrounds them.

The Daily Grind, or ‘Grind’ for short, is one of William and Mary’s well-frequented coffee shops. It provides a comfortable outlet for socialization, study, and of course, food and drink. Though it does serve coffee, tea, and various food items, it is better known for its role as an unofficial meeting house for the free-thinkers of campus.

The clank of stirring spoons are drowned out by the voices of passionate people. Breakfast sandwiches are consumed with gusto while students scroll through the latest breaking news stories. Others sit in groups working on class assignments while sipping delicious coffee.

If you stop by at the right time you might see professors sitting on the patio, enjoying a cuppa, while chatting with students nearby.

The Grind is one small representation of the people that make William and Mary unique, those that strive for social justice and speak to spread awareness on issues of all kinds.

A simple glance around the place will reveal incandescent hair colors compared to the the Northern Lights in Iceland.

Drinks are offered with a variety of milk substitutes, as dairy is much too mainstream and, based on a limited number of studies, is sure to lead to imminent death.

Frankly, if you’re not prepared to discuss the gender-pay inequality gap or the Black Lives Matter Movement, I would be weary of making the Grind your one stop shop for a caffeine pick me up.

Though the people may come off a bit strong at times, every opinion they hold is based out of some desire for the greater good.

The Grind might just seem like a quirky coffee shop to the eyes of a passerby, but it is filled with people who want to make the world a better place one americano at a time.
