William & Mary’s bookstore now features a beauty counter called The Glossary

It’s like a book glossary, but also lip gloss. Get it?

While someone might not expect a bookstore to clash with a Sephora, Barnes and Noble is changing the college bookstore experience with its new scheme: The Glossary. Rolling out in select Barnes and Noble campus bookstores, this new concept is basically a mini beauty store. Returning William & Mary students will be able to experience purchasing lipsticks and nail polish along with textbooks and t-shirts.

The Glossary will carry hair products, nail polish, makeup and other lotions and potions. Although it might seem remarkably strange to the casual observer that a bookstore is selling beauty products, it is not too extraordinary. Barnes and Noble campus bookstores have always carried things beyond books, like clothing, dorm items and Starbucks.

According to Racked, The Glossary is also perfect for a college campus. There is a high concentration of young people who are likely to buy beauty products. The Glossary is also likely to be placed at colleges that don’t have malls within walking distance. This way, if a student wants some foundation, they are more likely to turn to their friendly campus bookstore.

William & Mary is one of the first locations to receive the beauty treatment, along with Emory University, Tulane University and Southern Methodist University, Racked reports.

There are many days when you just want new foundation, but it is raining too hard to make the trip out on the town. There are many stressful times when you think, “if I could just buy some hairspray right now, my life would come together just like my hair.” There are many times when you forget someone’s birthday, and last minute you have to buy some expensive self-tanner to convince your sister you didn’t forget.

The Glossary is here for you.

The Glossary is already in the William & Mary bookstore. It is a super bright segment in the otherwise normally lit store. It does not carry many product lines, but the ones they do carry are pretty high end and pricey. Think Philosophy, Butter London, Living Proof, Smashbox and Bliss, although there is the somewhat less expensive Burt’s Bees product line.

The bookstore will also provide a decently varied deodorant selection, which is great for the hormonal, sweaty college students in the hellacious humidity that is Williamsburg.

It does slightly stick out like a sore thumb, but after months of intense research and focus groups, The Glossary is unlikely to fail. Stop by while purchasing or renting textbooks, form your own opinion, browse the options, stay a while. While making your brain more beautiful at college by learning interesting facts, you might as well make your face beautiful as well.
