In support of Colton Haynes coming out

Keep on, keeping on Colton

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly Colton Haynes, star of Arrow and former cast member of Teen Wolf, openly admitted to being gay. I have only one thing to say about that: YES.

I am so excited to see another celebrity walk in their truth. It’s crucial to be supportive of anyone of the LGBT+ community, including celebrities, considering the backlash that is probably going to result from Haynes coming out. But quite frankly I think that’s awesome that Haynes felt he could – he didn’t have to at all, but that he could comfortably share his sexuality (as he should).

Haynes said in his interview, “I didn’t feel like I owed anyone anything. I think, in due time, everyone has to make those decisions when they’re ready, and I wasn’t yet.”

I couldn’t be more happy for you, Colton and while that’s all fine and good, the reason I really wanted to write this article has more to do with the fact that Colton says that he checked into rehab for anxiety during all the fan speculation about his sexuality.

What? Hold on. Pause.

What sort of world do we live in where someone is so nervous to share their sexual orientation that they begin to suffer from anxiety? I can only imagine that the anxiety is only magnified being a celebrity considering that then the roles you’re offered begin to change too. Not to mention the ridicule that comes along with being in the spotlight as well.

How sad is it that being who you are fills you with such anxiety that you have to check yourself into a rehabilitation center to cope with the thought of how the public will react? So, while I was happy for him, I couldn’t help but find that aspect so saddening.

I can only hope that the overwhelming amounts of love and support he’s receiving from fans and non-fans alike is enough to drown out all the copious amounts of hate and that he’s well.

All my support,

Nakia
