Man shot dead at Farm Fresh

A 55-year-old man has been charged with second degree murder

This morning at 8:05am, a man was shot dead at the Farm Fresh Supermarket in James City County.

Brian Alexander Hicks, reportedly an Air Force veteran, shot Gabriel Ryan Maness, 34, multiple times before surrendering to police.

Maness, of Providence Forge, was confirmed dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported.

The police searched for accomplices, but found no evidence of any.

Hicks, 55, was carrying a .45 caliber handgun with two additional loaded magazines in his pocket. He has been charged with second degree murder and use of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

He is being held at the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail without bond.

Farm Fresh has said it will be as helpful in the investigation as possible. The store is currently closed.

The Farm Fresh Supermarket in question is about three miles from Thomas Nelson.
