Why the 757 is better than Blacksburg

We’re better than the 540 and I don’t care what anyone else says

The 757 encompasses various parts of southeast VA, like Norfolk, VA Beach, Hampton, Yorktown, and so on. Personally, I am from “bad news,” Newport News. Growing up, I didn’t necessarily like it. I had never lived anywhere else and it didn’t seem that special to me. Until I left.

After living in Blacksburg for about four years, my love of Bad News has grown. I guess distance really does make the heart grow fonder. Yes, the 757 may have its issues and we may not always be seen in the best light, but there are so many reasons why Newport News, and the rest of the 757, is better than the 540 (no offense).

We have the most unique fashion

Everyone looks different, no one looks the same. If you want to wear galaxy leggings and a bright pink crop top, no one’s going to look at you like you’re crazy. If you want to wear purple braids, go right ahead. Blacksburg has a very homogenous style and everyone seems to dress similarly. In the 757, that hardly ever happens.

The shopping is every shopaholic’s dream

There’s no need to drive 45 minutes to find a decent mall in the 757. There is great shopping all around you. MacArthur, Lynnhaven, Patrick Henry, Pembroke, the Premium Outlets. We have everything from Marc Jacobs to Rainbow. There’s something for everyone’s budget and taste.

We breed famous people

Ella Fitzgerald, Tyrod Taylor, Kam Chancellor, Missy Elliot, Mark Ruffalo, Wanda Sykes, Michael Vick (aside from the dog thing), James Avery, Allen Iverson, Pharrell. Uh, you’re welcome earth.

The food is everything

Literally every type of cuisine you can think of is in the 757 – from American to Jamaican to Greek, literally everything. Not to mention, they’re open late and the McDonald’s doesn’t close at 12am, come on Blacksburg, people want hamburgers after midnight. And yes, that is a picture of tater tot nachos. Shout-out to the Barrel Room.

The music and venues are insane

Nothing compares to the music scene in the 757. And during the summer, there is a concert every weekend. With places like the Coliseum, the Norva and the Amphitheater, you can see pretty much any artist your heart desires.

The locals really love it

There’s a reason the 757 tattoo is a thing. We take pride in our hometown. Don’t try to say anything negative around us because we will defend our home.
