Vanderbilt rape trial begins again after mistrial in summer

The trial for former Vanderbilt student, Cory Batey, began this morning

Last January, a jury found defendants Cory Batey and Brandon Vandenberg guilty on all counts.

Batey was found guilty of aggravated rape, attempted aggravated rape, and aggravated sexual battery. Vandenberg was found guilty of aggravated rape, attempted aggravated rape, aggravated sexual battery, tampering with evidence, and unlawful photography.

However, a mistrial was declared in the summer. The defense contested that a member of the jury had a past with sexual assault that he or she had not revealed during the jury selection process.

Today, the trial for defendant Cory Batey began at 9am. This time around, the defendants will have separate trials due to a medical condition of Vandenburg’s attorney.

Due to the intense media coverage surrounding the trial, the jury has been brought to Nashville from Chattanooga and sequestered in a hotel.
