UVA Reactions: The First Presidential Debate

‘Wait, you mean these are my only options?!’

In case you missed it, the first presidential debate between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton went down last Monday night. The general-election contenders took the stage at Hofstra University in New York to discuss important issues in their campaigns. Here at UVA, students had mixed reviews and reactions.

Some of us took sides:

S.S., 3rd year

“Donald Trump is a *bleeping* moron! He has no logic behind his arguments and his platform is based off of him spewing hate. There were some really great Hillary one-liners that made me go, ‘Hell yeah girl!'”

C.B., 4th year

“Trump spews falsehood. Hil’s (Hillary’s) arguments were well prepared but she lost her chill at some point, which is why some people dislike her, but I believe that it’s just the double standard between how men and women can behave.”

C.D.H., 3rd year

“Lester Holt (the moderator) didn’t know how to remain impartial and significantly targeted Trump more than Hillary. It was not very professionally conducted.”

S.W., 4th year.

R.W., 2nd year

“It was full of insults, especially coming from Trump, and just really poorly moderated. I enjoyed it and it showed me that Clinton can stay pretty level headed, even when dealing with Trump. I think I’d pick Clinton as the winner. Trump was mostly just a dick.”

Others just sat back and observed in shock, awe, despair, and even delight:

K.W., 3rd year

“I thought it was childish. There weren’t very many policies posed and the candidates just wasted each other’s time with name-calling.”

B.B., 4th year

“I half-watched it a separate tab. I just couldn’t focus on it.”

H.E., 2nd year

“It felt like I was watching a jester’s court. I think it’s funny that American politics have come to the point where the candidates laugh in each other’s faces while simultaneously listing personal accolades.”

G.W., 2nd year

“I didn’t even pay attention to second half of it.”

J.C., 3rd year.

D.C., 2nd year

“I didn’t like the debate. I did like that Jimmy Kimmel clip asking people about the debate before it even happened. Seriously, watch that Jimmy Kimmel thing.”
