Today would have been Dean Smith’s 86th birthday, and we miss him now more than ever

Happy birthday to one of the greatest coaches in college basketball history

Today, Dean Smith would have been 86 years old. He is a legend to every Carolina fan around the world and his influence will never be forgotten.

His 36 seasons as Carolina’s head coach for the men’s basketball program was more than impressive. Smith received the most wins of any coach at the time of his retirement. He had 27 consecutive 20-win seasons and 30 total 20-win seasons. He led the Tar Heels to 17 regular-season ACC titles, 13 ACC Tournament titles, 11 Final Fours and 2 NCAA championships.

These are just a few of his life-time achievements and do not include the many college basketball players he helped become legendary NBA players, but also the many he inspired to get into basketball all together.

Smith will forever live on as a coaching legend and, of course, a Tar Heel.
