‘I had my first kiss at 23 years old’: Meet UNC’s Alex Koszeghy

She had her first kiss in Hawaii *swoon*

Alex Koszeghy checked quite a few things off her bucket list during summer ’16. She took a solo trip to Hawaii. She went skydiving. She went zip lining. She went to the emergency room (this was unplanned). She had search and rescue called to look for her (this was also unplanned).

But the final thing she wanted was to have her first date.

“Because of homeschooling, I am a little behind in social norms,” Alex said, laughing. “I had gone on a total of two coffee dates prior to that.”

She decided she might as well conquer every fear in Hawaii, so Alex went on trustworthy Bumble to accomplish her final goal. She found a guy who seemed pretty cool, and they messaged each other.

She said, “I told him, ‘Fair warning, I’m awkward. Brace yourself. Run while you can.’ But he said ‘Oh I’m sure you’re not that awkward.’ I told him to just wait.”

The two planned a date on the beach at sunset. After dinner, they sat on their towels on the beach.

“I felt every muscle in my body stiffen,” she said. “I finally started to relax a little bit, and was coaching myself through.”

The stars came out and he laid down on his towel. Alex, feeling very awkward, asked what should she do. He suggested that she lay down next to him.

“I was like, ‘Oh.’ As soon as I laid down, it was just like rigor mortis had entered my body, I was so stiff.”

He finally asked if she was ready to go, to which Alex eagerly replied with a “yes.” He walked her to her car when she realized she couldn’t find her keys. She ended up dumping her purse onto her car until she found them.

She gathered herself and turned back to look at him. That was when she realized this was THE moment.

“I was just kind of like ‘Uh-oh, this is it.’ I told him, ‘I don’t really know what I should do now,” she said. He suggested she kiss him.

As soon as her lips hit his, she began laughing uncontrollably and pulled back immediately. Nothing was natural and she soon explained to him that she had no idea what she was doing.

“That poor boy looked horrified. He looked so scared.”

But not too scared. He texted her and asked her on a second date, where he was kind enough to give her some tips. After her Hawaii trip, she now considers herself prepared for any situation.

Moral of the story? Embrace the awkward. You’ll never know what may come out of it.
