‘A strange mix of awkward and awesome’: The RHA’s Silent Disco continues another year

Like a middle school dance combined with a rave

Walking into Fetzer the night of the Silent Disco is one of the most surreal experiences. Your first feeling is pure relief, as you realized you survived the tremendously long line – it was already past the bus stop by 9:15pm. It was unbearably hot because Fetzer is one hell of an old building.

Then the next feeling is, “Wow, this is a strange mix of awkward and awesome” as you finally enter the gym. Someone hands you headphones and you’re sucked into a crowd of what could be construed as a middle school dance mixed with a rave.

People are standing around in groups, some singing at the top of their lungs, some dancing to the music blasting in their head, some with headphones off just taking in the freaky relative silence of the gym around them.

The best part is that you can always tell when a good song’s on, because everyone’s headphones begin to glow the same color. That’s your chance to be a hipster and ruin the party by singing along to the oldies playing on a different station.

I suggest you attend the disco at least once in your time at UNC, as freshmen and seniors alike all agree it is a very unique kind of blast.

When asked about her experience, junior Maranda Hansley said: “This was my second year going. It was much more organized than last year. Last year, I got there in time to get a shirt, but I got skipped in all of the chaos and couldn’t get one.”

“The music was cooler this year. I liked that there was a variety of drinks that were available whenever we needed a refresher. The only thing that I would suggest to make it better is some kind of way to prevent theft. I got a t-shirt this year, but it was stolen when I left it on the wall so I wouldn’t have to carry it around.”

While there are obviously still some flaws in the system, the RHA put on another absolutely amazing Silent Disco.

I’d have to agree with Maranda on this one: “All in all, 9.25/10 stars!”
