Is there a building more beautiful than Bartlett?

Ignore the asbestos falling from the ceiling

UMass is a campus brimming with people, places, and constant construction. With so much going on at all times, each individual location holds a great amount of purpose and virtue. Regardless, one building at the heart of campus stands out amongst them all.

No. It’s not the hulking, brick Du Bois library; rather a smaller building with a large impact: Bartlett Hall

It’s named b(art)lett for a reason

Need a doodle to brighten your day; some kind words or motivational quotes? Peruse a bathroom stall! Several walls are also coated with murals, photographs, and in some cases, brightly colored paint. No matter where you turn, there is artistry at every corner.

It is a place where time stands still

Literally, because, you know…the clocks don’t usually work.

We have all passed through these halls at one point or another

Not many buildings can boast of that, can they? Practically every student on campus enrolls in College Writing 112 or 111 at some point in their college careers and is first introduced to Bartlett in that way. It also houses several majors including English, Philosophy, and Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies; not to mention courses outside of those subjects as well. Most who have taken non-HFA courses here are veterans of battling the heat in Bartlett’s expansive lecture hall downstairs.

It is a prime spot for adventure

Well, as much adventure as is possible in an academic building. With numerous floors, garden areas, and underground tunnels, what’s not to love? Never knew, Bartlett held such marvelous spots? Check them out today!

It’s not old, it’s antique

So some features need updating – big deal. Bartlett is a place where old meets new, displaying UMass’ history and longevity. Yeah, there’s no A.C., but hey, our mutual sweatiness makes for bonding material.

Two words: The Cube

a.k.a. one of the most underrated study spots on campus! Far too many people pass through these halls failing to acknowledge Bartlett’s worth for providing a top-notch study spot. Walk through the doors, turn right, and you are looking at it. A small cubicle room complete with worn-in, but ultra cozy sofas and an extra-large table for study sessions.

This place is vending machine heaven

Need a snack or a drink to quench your thirst? Come on in and take your pick from several different vending machines right at the front of the building! There’s everything from different flavors of milk to packaged coffee cakes that are sure to start your morning off right, or at least lead to a less hungry day.

The people in Bartlett are just better

Knowledgeable professors, helpful staff, hipster grad students, and innumerable undergrads. PLUS some great clubs and organizations (*ahem* “THE TAB”).

The Classrooms are . . . special

If you’ve ever explored these halls, or moreover been in a rush to get to a new class, then you know that the number system in Bartlett is incredibly unique. Classroom numbers go in order up to the twenties then skip to sixties, include numbers, and are scattered across multiple floors. However, we still manage to love this labyrinth.

The location is to die for

Bartlett is easily one of the best locations on campus. It’s central to pretty much everything –  just steps away from the library, and nearby to great food, the gym, and various living areas. The commute is great, and the vibe that this bustling community enables is one to appreciate.

So, maybe you wouldn’t necessarily rate Bartlett as your utmost favorite spot on campus (though clearly you should), but now you can at least appreciate its individuality among the rest. This building never fails to surprise, and whether you are just passing by or taking a class within, be sure to savor this unique experience. The doors are practically always open; ready to welcome you with all it has to offer.

With so much character and room for opportunity, Bartlett is an under-appreciated gem on the UMass campus!
