What happened at Pierpont last night, according to an eyewitness

‘She saw them and yelled ‘They have guns!”

Last night, the entire UMass campus went into lockdown after an armed man was reported in Pierpont Hall.

A warrant is currently out for his arrest, and a second suspect is being investigated.

A resident of the dorm, and a witness to the incident, relayed what they know to a Tab reporter:

“There was a problem or miscommunication… Anyway, due to the conflict one of the guys slapped the kid with his pistol and proceeded to start beating him up, as well as another kid.

A witness told The Tab: Blood spatters on the Pierpont carpet

“Then my friends went to go break it up because they live nearby and heard what was happening. My friend who lives across the hall saw them and she yelled, ‘They have guns!’ so they ran to call the police.

“Then everything locked down.”

There were no shots fired, but the student victim suffered a head injury and was taken to Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton. He has since been released.

The UMass Police Department released information on their Facebook page, saying that charges include armed robbery, assault and battery, and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

They also report that a handgun was shown but not fired during the incident in Pierpont, and they will release updates as they receive more information.
