A Letter from Winter Session Students to the Rest of UD

Go home

Dear fellow students,

As the frost starts to melt off the remnants of Winter Session, and we, those who have remained loyally on campus while the rest of you were gallivanting through Caribbean beaches and European castles or staying at home, distancing yourself from the stress of schoolwork for a month and enjoying the luxury of home-cooked meals, look forward to welcoming you all back.

Sure, it was nice not waiting in long lines at Dunkin’ or Starbucks. It was pretty cool not having to weave around 15 different people walking at the pace of a handicapped turtle on the way to class. And yeah, we didn’t miss you all when we needed to find a place to sit at BrewHaha or the library to study for midterms.

We also didn’t shed any tears when we wanted some peace and quiet, for whatever reason, and we knew we could go practically anywhere to get it. The fact that the entire campus, though sometimes desolate and eerie, seems overall more relaxed and tranquil is something we’ve grown to appreciate and realized we needed after the complete madness of 2016. But that doesn’t mean we don’t miss the effervescent presence of thousands of our fellow students, clogging up our walkways and… HEY THAT WAS MY SEAT!

And we do admit, we feel a bit different after having gone through an on-campus winter session. There’s a sense of ownership we have now that we didn’t before. We were the first ones to see this campus following the dawning of the new year. We were the first ones to see it survive, although a bit more fragile and shaken, after the inauguration of a reality TV star. We were the first ones to handle its first major snowfall of the season. We were the first victims of 2017’s plague.

We survived. We endured. And because of this, UD has become ours in a different way than it is yours.

And come Spring Semester, as the rest of you globetrotters and home-stayers trudge back to campus with fresh and rejuvenated faces, understand that we are super stoked to have you back even though our faces might give off an expression that says “Go home.”

Love,

The UD Winter Session Squad
