Why every college girl needs a retreat mid-semester

Recharging is important

As much as I love college, stress and time commitments start to take toll on you a little ways into the semester. Studying, exams, and homework assignments get to be draining and the weeks are long. Sometimes, you just need to get off campus for something besides either going home or doing errands – and I don’t mean just a night out on the weekends or a workout at the gym (but hey the gym still is bae).

Looking back, without even realizing it, I’ve gone on a ‘retreat’ or ‘outing’ once every semester of college, as well volunteering in the local community, and it’s always one of the highlights of the semester.

Relax, it’s going to be okay

This past weekend, I went on an amazing service project trip and retreat with my sorority. Not only did we give back to the Lewes Community, but it was great to switch up the scenery and to take a break for a little bit from school. Of course, sometimes you’ll miss all of your friends having fun at college, but it’s only one weekend and there will be plenty more. You will come back refreshed, recharged, and no longer exhausted from quite a few consecutive stressful weeks.

Because who doesn’t love the beach?!

Taking time for yourself allows you to grow

The saying saying ‘see the world’ is seriously accurate. If you know me, you know I’m proud to go to Delaware and to be a Blue Hen, but that I’m obsessed with traveling and exploring as well. College is awesome and I’m beyond grateful to be getting a great education, but I never want to be stuck in the college bubble and not go off campus or see something else during my semester. One thing that I’ve learned in the past few years of undergrad is that growth is essential. Nothing consistently stays the same except change, and that growth is always necessary for the best.

Exploration is all a part of college

Branching off of my last idea, college has taught me to explore the world around me, and to see new things or places. Once in awhile, see something new as a day trip or a weekend getaway to enjoy and recharge yourself. There’s something so exciting about new places, even if we don’t know what to expect at first.

Serving your community is its own form of learning

One of the best breaks to take in my opinion could also be community service. Giving back and helping others is extremely rewarding.  During the spring of my freshman year I joined Gamma Sigma Sigma the service sorority, and sophomore year I went on an alternative spring break trip to Tennessee and North Carolina through UDaB (University of Delaware Alternative Breaks)! Joining those two organizations has been incredible with doing so much volunteering. I’ve met some of my absolute favorite people whom all have a heart for helping others and service.

I dare you to take a break for one day or even a weekend if you choose and go do something you wouldn’t normally do. Whether it’s walk around a state park, the beach board walk, or even a cultural experience like a museum visit, visit a place that you’ve never been to before, or volunteer. Sometimes the little things in life can be some of the best things.
