Crackdown on Main Street bars will lead to shut down of certain establishments

Let’s hope your favorites are safe

Watch out Blue Hens! According to an article writeup by Delaware Online, there is going to be a crackdown on Newark nightlife. This crackdown will be focused mostly on the bars on Main Street, trying even harder to prevent underage students and people with fake ID’s from getting served.

The police will be using a point system to monitor the bars hoping to eventually shut down the establishments that are not taking appropriate measures to prevent rowdy behavior and underaged patrons being served. The point system will not affect liquor stores, or three bars on main street: Klondike Kate’s, Deer Park Tavern, and Grain Craft Bar and Kitchen.

If an establishment gains over ten points within a twelve month period, then there will be a special meeting called between the bar and the proper authorities to determine a change and a plan of action to enforce better behavior by the bar and its patrons in the future.

This crackdown came after a tragic incident that happened last Saint Patrick’s Day. A young man who was visiting the school fell off of the roof of a frat house and died, a wake up call to both the students and the police that the University of Delaware party scene may not be as safe as it seems.

As of right now the new system is effecting bars, but the police station is hoping to get landlords on board eventually. This would extend the crackdown from bars and restaurants to also include frat houses, where most of the underage drinking at the University of Delaware takes place.
