Everything you learn sophomore year at Delaware

House parties are better than frat parties

Freshman year can be an absolute shambly mess trying to figure out how to navigate college, so come sophomore year, you’ve got a bit more experience and wisdom. You’re still not an upperclassmen, but at least you won’t get yourself caught carrying around a map of campus with your lanyard on. Here’s what at least I realized during my second year as a Blue Hen.

Not a lot of people go to the football games

Everyone at UD is proud to be a Blue Hen, but we lack school spirit. As a freshman I went to a few football games, but as a sophomore barely anyone goes to them anymore. Maybe it’s because you need to take a bus to the game on South Campus, or that our team isn’t as well known as other schools, or because of the famous UDages. Regardless, going to a UD football game is fun, but not the first thing I would think of doing in my free time in the fall semester.

Ceasar Rodney Dining Hall is the only good dining hall

The ‘new dining hall’ makes Pencader and Russell dining halls look like crap. CR has a better caterer and way more choices. Not to mention that it’s the second largest college dining hall on the east coast.

House parties are better than frat parties

Enough said. Go where you know people at and then you can enjoy the night hanging out with your friends.

Dages will never get old

These are a blast on the weekend – in my opinion way better than ‘going out’ at night. Socialize with your friends all afternoon then finish it off with dinner on Main Street. St. Patty’s day at UD is awesome to say the least, with celebrating all day long.

Don’t always get Insomnia Cookies

These delicious cookies are great to get once in awhile, but not all the time. They’re expensive and oily/fattening so definitely limit yourself.

Stop eating on Main Street so often

From going on ‘girl dates’ in my sorority and post dages, it’s easy to love eating out on Main Street (hey we have Panera, Chipolte, Dunkin Donuts, Newark Deli and Bagels… how could you go wrong), but the money spent adds up quickly. So enjoy, but still limit yourself.

UD is socially small and geographically huge

From being in clubs or Greek life, it’s extremely easy to have a mutual friend/connection with anyone you know or know of in an organization. This makes for a ‘small world’- a good and bad thing. Thankfully, UD has a spread out beautiful campus too.

Sophomore floors aren’t that social

It sucks, but people get cliquey and exclusive, it just happens. Not everyone has this mindset, but if you live on Campus as a sophomore- whether it’s on North Campus, the South Green or the Christiana Towers, sophomore floors aren’t always like freshman floors. Thankfully, I still enjoyed hanging out with both my freshman and sophomore floors, but this doesn’t always happen.

Upperclassman dorms

Don’t do something just to put it on your resume

Don’t join anything just because you did it in high school or feel obligated to join. Instead, become involved in something that you legit want to be a part of and devote your free time to. You only have four years at UD so make the most of them while you  can.

Make the most of easy breadth classes

From taking some breadth classes as a freshman that were ‘easy A’s’ or easy classes to do well in, I’ve realized just how good I had it. Courses can get harder as your semesters go on, especially since you’re going to be taking more upper level and eventually capstone courses.
