Meet Hope Curran: The most talented photographer in Isla Vista, if not the world

Her Insta game is fire

Hope is a fourth year global studies and art double major at UCSB, who is not only a student-athlete but an extremely talented photographer. Her mission to exude joy, happiness, beauty, color and an exposure of the community has driven her to photograph moments in her life and share them with others.

Nature, sunlight, family, friends and strangers are her subjects that she works with to capture times that are worthy of documentation. The use of her camera lets her unravel new tales and discover new places, cultures, and meanings that she uses to keep fullness in her life. Her creative journey is seen in her photos as a glimpse into her life and is shared with the community.

“Hope is defined as the feeling of expectation and the dream for something to happen. I believe God has created me to create. Light is an important component of exposure in photography and is a recurring theme in my work.

“My faith compels me to shine light on darkness and guide my generation’s feet in the path of peace. Through photography, short films, and printmaking I aim to visually represent spirituality and the inexplicable.

“I aspire to grow in my understanding of God, eternity, and my identity by wandering the world with a camera in my hands and hope in my heart. The destination is not determined, but the journey and hope found along the way is documented.”

Below is just a glimpse of her work from two collections. Her main portfolio can be found here.

Glimpse of Travel

Hope studied abroad in France and visited new places while capturing her experiences on film. She said: “It seems that every time we go some place we are missing something we are accustomed to, but there are always new things to be had and learn.

“Then when we return it seems we are missing something from somewhere else. I think every place is unique and we must live the way the people live where we are. That way we are never really missing anything, just living.”

“Champs Elysse”

“Wander”

 A Final Word by Hope ~ Dust///Clay//Hope

the malleability of humanity
makes it hard to see
are we good or are we bad?
is humankind going mad?
the brokenness of our world
the brokenness of our heart
separated from our creator
feeling worlds apart
we consider ourselves wise
but this comes to our demise
the end of the experimen
t do we still choose to live in torment?
will we die of heart attack
or choose to live and act
become the ones who make things happen to stop the silence
be the ones to put an end to the violence..
